Regeneration and environmental qualification of Torvajanica coastline

TYPES: Masterplan
LOCATION: Pomezia
YEAR: 2016
ACTIVITIES: Masterplan
AREA: 200 ha

The project proposes the regeneration and increasing of environmental resources in a large undeveloped land close to the coastline of Torvajanica. The project focuses on the possibility of developing the area – reaching across 200 ha – with public and private functions to increase the value of local environmental aspects while meeting the emerging demand for a new urbanity in Pomezia and Torvajanica.
Consequently, the project cannot be implemented without considering the important role of the environment and being high compatible while going hand-in-hand with both quality and quantity.
The programme will be implemented in phases and expects the half of the area – about 100 hectares – to become the core point of a complex environmental system, which will be realized through public and private actions: eco-sustainable agriculture, urban agriculture, nature trails, protected areas, enhanced archeological sites.
Agricultural sector becomes the key element for an active and ongoing environmental protection. The project starts from the new design and reorganization of the coastline of Pomezia, the demolition of many houses in the front row of the coastline, being constructed in breach of town planning regulations, and the transfer into an inner area in newly designed housing buildings. It will also include new pedestrian areas and the waterfront renovation.
In the other half of the area, the project provides for the creation of the first Italian “Life Science Campus”. A scientific and technological innovation center embracing all aspects of an advanced “Quality of Life”, not based on an uncritical development but rather on a responsible growth.
Within a single building of about 100 hectares, the project includes: urban services at local and regional level, facilities for research and innovation in life sciences, a coordinated unit of social, residential and health services for elderly, namely a structure for social cohesion. The programme will also develop new eco-sustainable housing models and an agrifood chain linked to the Agri-Business Park to improve local agricultural “zero km” production.
